So, you’ve decided it’s time to hire someone. From the search for the right candidate to onboarding your new employee, the recruitment process can be overwhelming. There are many factors to consider when hiring a new employee, and it’s best to make the hiring process as efficient as possible in order to find the right person for the position you’re looking to fill the first time around.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore what we at Achilles Group call Recruiting Effectiveness, or what an efficient recruiting process looks like and how you can apply it to your organization. The first step is to put together a well-constructed recruiting process and toolkit. Follow our tips below to set yourself up for recruiting success.
- Determine the Roles and Responsibilities of the Hiring Manager. Meet with your leadership team, and decide who needs to be a part of the recruiting process, what the roles and responsibilities will be of the position you are trying to fill, when you would like to fill the position by and who will be the decision maker when it’s time to select a candidate and make an offer. Getting the answers to these questions upfront will help put everyone on the same page and prevent you and your hiring team from going backwards in the recruiting process.
- Create a Recruiting Toolkit. You will need a number of tools to kick off your search for the right candidate, including an interview guide, job advertisement, phone screen template, candidate scorecard and face-to-face interaction guide. Some positions might also require an additional assessment or skills tests. This will vary upon the industry you are in or position you are hiring for.
- Develop a Recruiting Timeline. It is crucial to develop an accurate timeline of how long it will take to recruit the right candidate. While at times employers can find star candidates within a few days or a week, it typically takes a minimum of 5-6 weeks to source an ideal candidate. Allowing enough time will keep you and your hiring team from rushing the process, and allow you to fully vet each candidate to see if they will be a good fit for your organization.
