The 7 Habits Book Series Review: Habit #3 – Put First Things First

The Achilles Team recently read through “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey. Last week, we discussed the second habit, “Begin with the End in Mind”. The third habit is “Put First Things First”. In this chapter, Covey discusses the importance of organizing and executing tasks and goals to achieve your most important priorities.

The third habit is a result of individuals adopting Habits 1 & 2. In Habit 2, we spoke about the importance of our creativity. Habit 3 speaks to the importance of practical creation. An independent mind is the only way to effectively self-manage. Self-management gives you the ability to make the right decisions and actions. If you are putting first things first, you are choosing what is of most value to you, while using the first two habits to do it.

Achilles team member, Kristen McGullion comments, “It’s very important to put first things first. If you take the time to intentionally organize your priorities, it becomes much easier to tackle big projects. Next steps become clearer and delegation develops naturally.”

This is when effective delegation comes into play. Delegation plays a major role in both personal, and organizational growth. Freeing up your schedule means you are able to have the power to do high-level activities. In an organization, when delegation is properly done, both sides benefit because both sides are working effectively, ultimately saving time.

Next week, we’ll take a look at Habit 4, “Think Win Win”, with input from Achilles Group team member Christina Harmon.
